Father of Education
Even during his life Comenius became an authority in the sphere of education. His first books were translated into all European languages, the ideas of this first modern educationalist were avowed by Arabs, but for instance even Jesuits. He is the author of tens of pedagogical principles, which are still valid, and he wrote epochal schoolbooks.
What ideas and opinions, thanks to which he is called Father of Education, are then involved?
Instruction must be open to the public and available to all children and young people without any discrimination between sexes or social backgrounds. Education ought to be provided gratis for everybody.
The process of instruction must be synoptic and examples ought to be used during it. The pupil should perceive the object with all his senses and understand it. Thus Comenius wanted to remove mechanical learning without comprehension.
The process of instruction ought to progress from the known points towards the unknown points and from easy items towards complicated items.
The mother tongue is prior to Latin.
Education ought to be formed as a connection of sense and faith.
Emphasis ought to be laid on training physical abilities and craft.
Upbringing at preschool age is very important.
